The weavers of the Kamba tribe are extremely creative and skilled, enjoying free reign over colours and patterns, weaving each basket to their own individual styles and tastes. Baskets take up to four days to weave, and weaving is often completed around agricultural duties, household chores, childcare and social events.
Support the revival of the beautiful art of kiondo weaving when you purchase one of our woollen baskets: in doing so you also help us to support these weavers in a truly fair trade. Basket weaving has become a flexible, supplementary source of additional income for the weavers, whose main earnings come from farming – a line of work which depends heavily on rainfall and can prove unsustainable. Each ethical basket is supplied with a little information about the weaving cooperative.
